Things to Consider

Water-powered backup sumps operate using your municipal water source to create suction which pulls the water out of your sump pit in the event your main sump pump fails. It’s connected by a ¾” line to your municipal water source. The water is pumped out of your basement through dedicated piping that’s run through the sill plate and dispersed externally. This is a safety measure to ensure the water leaves your basement in the event your main drainage has been clogged. The system is also equipped with an alarm to notify you when your main pump has failed and your water-powered backup has been turned on.

It has a couple of distinct advantages:

  • Your sump system will continue to drain excess water from your basement during a power outage without the need for a battery or power source. Unlike battery operated backups, water-powered backups never lose their power. As long as you are connected to municipal water and there is sufficient water pressure (typically at least 20-25 PSI), the run time is virtually unlimited. The money you’ll spend on the water bill in an emergency is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of flood repair.

  • Using a water-powered backup eliminates the need to monitor and maintain a battery which makes it a favorite among property managers, vacation rentals, and those who may not want to monitor their systems as often.

At Pride Plumbing of Rochester, we recommend the SumpJet® water-powered backup sump pump from Liberty Pumps. These models are fully-assembled and boast a compact design and high-output flow rates to help protect your basement during a power outage or main pump failure. The efficient design removes more water per gallon used.

You have the option of selecting a standard alarm model that comes with a super bright LED alarm ring, or a NightEye wireless-enabled model that can send notifications straight to your smartphone.

Maintenance & Care for Water Backup Sump Pump Systems

These models were created for little maintenance. When you become a Blue or Stars and Stripes Service Agreement Member, you will automatically receive annual maintenance checks on both your primary and backup sump pump system. However, performing monthly maintenance checks is still important. Here are some ways that you can perform these maintenance checks on your own:

  • Clean any debris that may be near the suction screen and check that the float operates without issue

  • Test the alarm every 6 months: When your backup pump is triggered, the alarm should sound, and can be turned off by using the "Silence" button on device

Proudly Serving Customers Across Monroe & Ontario Counties

We install many of these systems a year in neighborhoods across Monroe and Ontario counties, such as Penfield, Webster, and Brighton. Check out our reviews and read what our customers think about our fast, friendly service.

Keep in mind that if you are in a more rural neighborhood like Mendon, Honeoye Falls, or Victor, and your water supply comes from a well, then water-powered backup systems aren’t a good choice for you. This is partially because the power outage will shut off the well pump. You’ll also want to make sure your home meets the backup pump’s specific criteria for water pressure, flow rate, and pipe type. Keep in mind that a water-powered backup pump may not pump out as much volume as a battery powered backup pump.

Generally speaking, water-powered backups have the capacity to move between 800-1000 gallons of water per hour at a 10’ lift when fully functioning. That’s nothing to sneeze at! But if you’re concerned about a water-powered backup system being able to keep up in the event of a flood, it’s better to ask questions beforehand rather than find out the hard way.

Pride Plumbing of Rochester is happy to help you determine which water-powered backup pump will work for you. We are also proud to feature and install American made systems like Liberty Pumps!
