What's the Average Life of a Water Heater?

The average lifespan of a conventional water heater is anywhere between 8 and 12 years long. This is achieved by regular maintenance and repairs. Below we have 3 indicators on when it may be time to replace your water heater:

  • It's the End of its Lifespan - Like we mentioned in the above paragraph, when you maintain and repair your water heater, it can last anywhere from 8 to 12 years. But at some point, even with proper care, your water heater is going to reach its expiration date and may cause you more problems due to its old age.

  • Rusty Water - Even though conventional water heaters are made of steel, they are still very susceptible to rust. If you notice brownish water coming out of your faucet, it may be due to your water heater having rust inside the tank. You'll want to address this before it impacts your family's health.

  • Water Heater Leaking - Leaks can be much more common when water heaters near the end of their lifespan. When a leak isn't addressed, it can cause significant property damage. Make sure to routinely check for water pooling around the base of your water heater.

Different Types of Water Heaters We Can Service

Water heaters come in a variety of styles, types, makes, and models. Does that mean you need to find a variety of water heater service companies to work on your water heater? Not if you come to Pride Plumbing of Rochester! We train our water heater technicians to be able to repair, tune-up, and install all sorts of water heaters, so you only need to know one phone number for all your water heater service needs: 585-271-7150.

Three of the most common types of water heaters we service are:

  • Gas Water Heater: Most homes come equipped with a gas water heater with a large, multi-gallon tank filled with water. A gas burner under the tank supplies the heater to the water tank. Despite gas water heaters being common, they are not highly efficient at keeping water heated and supplied to your plumbing fixtures on demand. If you have a gas water heater, you may want to consider upgrading it soon.

  • Electric Water Heater: An electric water heater functions quite similar to a gas water heater, except it does not have a gas burner underneath it. Instead, electrical heating elements are placed near the core of the tank. Electricity is used to heat up the elements, which in turn heat up the water. Electrical water heaters are a good choice in areas with lower electricity prices, such as Fairport, or if you're just looking for an efficient water heater to replace your existing gas unit.

  • Tankless: To get an advanced water heater for your home, let us install a tankless water heater. As the name implies, a tankless water heater does without the multi-gallon water tank. This sleeker design enables a tankless water heater to be installed in smaller spaces in your home. Perhaps more impressively, though, tankless water heaters heat water on demand, giving you practically unlimited hot water. If you hate when hot water runs out in the middle of a shower, a tankless water heater is a must.

FAQ

A traditional tank water heater stores water in a large tank and then heats it. Every time you use a house utility involving water, you are using pre-heated water from the tank. Your water source will refill the tank as hot water is used and the cycle will continue.

A tankless water heater is also known as an on-demand or instant water heater. Rather than pre-heating and storing water, it heats water as it flows through the unit.

A hybrid water heater, also known as a heat pump water heater, is essentially a combination of a traditional and tankless unit. It has a traditional storage tank, but it requires a heat pump, which is a device that moves heat from one area to the other, to heat the water.

To get an accurate answer, you would have to calculate how much hot water you use, decide what fuel source you need, think about the number of people in your household, and determine how much hot water each person uses.
For a loose estimate, we would recommend getting:

  • 30-40 gallon water heater for 1-2 people
  • 40-50 gallon water heater for 2-3 people
  • 50-60 gallon water heater for 3-4 people
  • 60-80 gallon water heater for 5 or more people

It depends! Sometimes, people do not have a choice between which type of fuel to use due to not having both gas and electricity to choose from. Both of them have pros and cons, but here are short descriptions of each type of unit. Contact us; we can fully explain your options and recommend the best water heater for you and your home.

Gas Water Heater:
Gas units are designed to burn natural gas or propane and most manufacturers offer a natural gas model and a propane model. Gas water heaters could be beneficial for large families with high hot water needs. However, these units are higher maintenance and less energy efficient.

Electric Water Heater:
Electrical water heaters are easier to troubleshoot and are extremely energy efficient. Currently, gas prices are lower than electricity prices, but electricity prices tend to fluctuate less than gas prices.

We only carry high-efficiency water heaters. Below are the specific types and brands that we carry.

Traditional Tank:

  • AO Smith: These water heaters are designed to be eco-friendly, reduce energy consumption, and lower carbon emissions.
  • State: These water heaters are designed to be durable and rugged while being energy-efficient.
Tankless:
  • Navien: These tankless water heaters are Energy Star rated and have a very small carbon footprint, which saves energy and money in the long run.
Hybrid:
  • HTP: This brand’s heat pump water heater has an energy factor that’s more than two times better than a standard electric water heater. This increases efficiency and saves money.

The T&P (Temperature & Pressure) relief valve protects your water heater from excess pressure and ultimately catastrophic failure. If your T&P valve is damaged, plugged, or blocked, it can result in this happening. A licensed professional should inspect the T&P relief valve at least every five years to ensure there’s no damage caused by corrosive water, mineral deposits, or other problems.

We recommend replacing your water heater every 10 years. Waiting too long to replace your water heater can result in costly damage to your home.

Signs that it is time to replace your standard water heater include:

  • It runs out of water quickly
  • The tank is rusty
  • There is water around the tank
  • The tank is rumbling and noisy

Your tankless water heater can last 20-25 years with routine care and maintenance.
